Niedersachsen Institutes of Technology (NTH)
Joining forces – experiencing cooperation

With around 23,000 students enrolled in Architecture, Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Science
and Engineering at the three participating universities, NTH is one of the largest research and educational
institutions in the German academic landscape.
This alliance of universities is characterised by joint future-oriented key research areas, coordinated research
projects and cross-university collaboration in various research centres.
The President of Leibniz Universität Hannover, Professor Dr.-Ing. Erich Barke, assumed the Chair of the
NTH Board in 2013. According to NTH legislation, this position rotates between the member universities
every two years. The Board, NTH’s management body, consists of the three participating universities’ respective
president and two external board members.

Passing on knowledge - Gentelligent components in their lifecycle – the new generation of components

What we offer

The long-term objective of the Collaborate Research Centre (CRC) 653 “Gentelligent Components in Their Lifecycle”, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) is to avoid the physical separation of components and the appropriate information and to create „gentelligent“ components. The term “gentelligent” is composed of “genetic” and “intelligent”. “Gentelligent” components are for example workpieces that store information on their production and search independently for their path through manufacturing systems, or chassis components that monitor their condition autonomously and, where required,
arrange independently for an inspection. In 17 sub-projects, the scientists are conducting joint research for this vision. It is an interdisciplinary approach: Ten institutes from the fields of production engineering, electrical engineering and laser technology are involved. They are creating multidisciplinary knowledge for the component generation of the future.
