Leading scientists from major universities of Latvia and fifty innovative entrepreneurs have teamed up to establish technology transfer centre for innovative products. The Baltic Innovative Research and Technology Institute (BIRTI) unites and coordinates cooperation between universities, scientific institutes and entrepreneurs.
The BIRTI has identified three fields of education, research, technology transfer, innovation and socio-economic demand clusters, whose development in the BIRTI project will be achieved:
# Bio-pharmacy, BioPharmAlliance;
# Nanostructures materials and high energy radiation, NanoTechEnergy;
# Smart Technologies in engineering, BaltSmartTech.
New, innovative companies are intended to be established by pre-cleared approbation of scientific ideas and processes for commercialization by attracting foreign and Latvian financial investment. Corporate performance will be measured in newly created jobs, economic performance, added value and socio - economic environment in terms of development. Synergy Baltic-wide supply and demand will take a coherent approach in technology transfer and innovation, high value-added business information, social and intellectual environment.

Cluster brings together scientific institutions and enhances existing infrastructure to establish up-to-date base for material research, aimed to development of competitive, innovative and knowledge-based products: innovative multifunctional materials and advanced materials technologies. The cluster concentrates on multifunctional materials for radiation energy conversion, data storage, transfer and conversion, as well as on the efficient use of high-tech devices.
