Applied Research

Creating solutions to organizational and technological challenges, both within the manufacturing sites and the value networks of industrial enterprises, is the focus of the research and development work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA.

With 5 business units, 14 research departments, a competence center for digital tools in manufacturing and the Stuttgart Production Academy (SPA) our R&D projects aim to optimize manufacturing processes and thereby being as close as possible to the needs of the manufacturing companies. We support our customers towards a more cost-effective and sustainable production by identifying and unlocking the potential for automation. Affiliated departments of Fraunhofer IPA are in Mannheim, Bayreuth, Rostock, Vienna, Budapest and Osaka. Today employing around 350 scientists, it has an annual budget of approximately € 60 million. Fraunhofer is the biggest application oriented research organization in Europe.

Innovative Management of Dynamic Manufacturing Networks

What we offer

As partner in the IMAGINE Project, which studies the innovative end-to-end approach of creating and managing Dynamic Manufacturing Networks (DMNs), Fraunhofer IPA focuses on their use within companies with multiple production sites. One of the main challenges is the data exchange between the partners, to which IPA developed applications to integrate the production IT systems of each site involved.
The design sequence is:
• The processes for the desired product are requested from the platform
• The capable production sites are searched
• The capacity in each of the sites is retrieved from the IT systems
• The configurations of the supply network are simulated to find the best partners
• The production data from the shop floor is monitored in real-time via a centralized web-based dashboard

What we are looking for

We are looking for partners which are interested in a working industry 4.0 solution to manage Dynamic Manufacturing Networks. This could be:
- Large companies with a dynamic internal production network,
- Large companies and SMEs that want to reach new markets,
- SMEs that are willing to profit from local or global supply networks,
- SMEs that are part of a manufacturing network and want to enhance their service,
- Chambers of commerce or other organizations that want to offer new services in order to strengthen the competitiveness of their clients.
Fraunhofer IPA offers consulting services, research opportunities and implementation assistance within the topic areas of order management, production automation, and value networks.
