Research

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Spanish and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim. According to its Statute, its mission is to foster, coordinate, develop and promote scientific and technological research, of a multidisciplinary nature, in order to contribute to advancing knowledge and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to train staff and advise public and private entities on this matter.

Management procedure and simultaneous control of a devices network

What we offer

CSIC has developed a management procedure and simultaneous control of a devices network. The system
enables classify the messages exchanged among the devices and the control system in response to a hierarchy of
priorities increasing its operational. Additionally the system enables the generation of events, changes of the
devices status which may affect its operation. These events are subsequent reported to the control system that,
if necessary, performs a quick reconfiguration of the devices.

Universal controller and virtual sensor

What we offer

CSIC, in collaboration with the University of Seville, has developed a method to provide the generation of digital circuits that implement multivariable Piece-Wise Affine (PWA) functions without approximations. These circuits offer a high performance in terms of area, speed, and power. The method presents two additional features: programmability and re-configurability. Both characteristics allow the implementation of several functions in the same integrated circuit, generating devices that could integrate the requirements of any controller or virtual sensor easily.

Crypto-biometric device for real-time human recognition at any object

What we offer

CSIC, in collaboration with University of Seville, has developed a microelectronic device that provides real-time human recognition from a fingerprint image. The device extracts a feature vector from the fingerprint image that allows fingerprint classification, indexing, and recognition. In addition, the method offers protection of the stored template and allows generating cryptographic keys, which increases the device security and allows using the device in a wide variety of applications with cryptographic requirements.
The posibility of incorporating real-time human recognition to objects of everyday life makes the patented system a tool with high utility and versatility.

Simultaneously generation of high-quality unclonable identifiers and true random numbers from semiconductor memories (SRAMs)

What we offer

CSIC, in collaboration with University of Seville, has developed a method that can generate simultaneously high-quality identifiers and true random numbers from the start-up values of semiconductor memories that use bistable latching cells (such as Static Random Access Memories, SRAMs). The identifiers generated are unique of that memory. Experimental results using the method show that the length of the identifiers can be reduced in 45% with the same identification capability (the complexity of an error correction code decreases considerably to extract a cryptographic key) and the bits required to obtain full entropy can be reduced in 78%.
The method can be applied to standard digital designs and can be carried by the final user, without the need of complex laboratory set-ups.

Bidirectional satellite file transference procedure with data compression

What we offer

CSIC, in collaboration with the University of Islas Baleares, has developed a new procedure that maximizes the throughput of satellite data communications of network sensor devices. The procedure, based on the storage, compression and transmission of data to be transferred, reduces both communications as associated consumption costs. In addition, its bidirectional capacity enables reconfigure the devices from the base station as well as transfers executable files to perform any required application.

Wireless battery-free biomedical signal monitoring patch

What we offer

CSIC has developed a system for the remote monitoring of physiological patterns, such as temperature and heart rate, without decreasing the mobility or comfort of the patient. The system comprises a reader instrument, for enabling the measure procedure and processing the received information; and patch transponders, singled out with individual identifiers, for capturing and wirelessly transmitting sensory data. The system, based on passive RFID technology combined with transmitted time reference strategies, does not require tags to be supplied from primary batteries, exhibits a wireless coverage in the order of meters and offers the ability to measure different physical quantities simultaneously.

Automatic sensor calibration system for the remote monitoring of electric biopotentials

What we offer

CSIC has developed a low cost system for the calibration of front-ends for the acquisition and signal conditioning of bioelectrical sensors which is able to adjust the frequency transfer characteristic and the voltage gain level of the captured biopotential before its conversion to digital domain. The calibration system is autonomous, suitable for monolithic integration and has little impact on the form factor of the sensor.

Converter from instant to dynamic synapses in pulsed neural networks

What we offer

CSIC has developed a system that allows pulse processing with dynamic integration synapses into simple neural integrated circuits such as with the instant integration ones. The system is based on the incorporation of an event scheduler block which spaces the pulses received by the neurons. In this way the contribution of the pulses is not instantaneous avoiding that neurons take precipitated and erroneous activation decisions.

3D-Image processor for feature detection

What we offer

CSIC, in collaboration with the Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Sevilla, has developed a hardware device that enables integration of all the elements of an artificial vision system into a single chip. The implementation of the chip into a vertical integration processing architecture, also known as 3D CMOS, enables in real time processing while maintaining a practical image size. This system represents an alternative to the high computational cost of already known image processing techniques. Autonomous systems based on this chip are useful in robotics, medical and aeronautics applications among others.

Image enhancement processor based on edge detection and anisotropic diffusion

What we offer

The CSIC, in collaboration with the University of Seville, has developed a hardware device that enables, using mixed-signal circuitry, image improvement by means of edge detection and smoothing of homogeneous areas. In order to do this, each pixel is represented by a voltage value proportional to the light intensity at that point and subsequently compared with the voltage values of neighboring pixels. The elementary in-pixel circuits have low power consumption. This enables developing power-efficient artificial vision systems with applications in robotics, surveillance and navigation aids among others.
