Modelling household responses to energy efficiency measures

What we offer

The pre start-up offers bespoken simulations of cities that build on advanced representations of households. In contrast to other markets the demand side of energy markets is often derived demand and more strongly shaped by households, which suggests a complex modelling approach.
Developed at the University of Surrey, our model combines three well-established modelling approaches – micro-simulations, spatial simulations and agent-based modelling – to build a single state-of-art model of cities, addressing (i) heterogeneity of households in multiple and interrelated ways, (ii) differences between neighbourhoods and boroughs, and (iii) behaviour and spatial interaction of individuals and households respectively.

What we are looking for

Our intelligence is of interest for businesses and policy-makers who seek to promote energy related innovations. In particular our model is designed to answer questions relating to:

(1) population dynamics that may particularly influence the returns on investment of long-term projects (e.g. in an aging population),

(2) different diffusion rates of environmental innovations resulting from the heterogeneity of households (such as different household budgets or environmental attitudes),

(3) spatial aspects of household behaviours like commuting to and from work, journeys to assist family members, trips to provide for food and services etc.

Commercial agreements are sought.

What we offer

The start-up offers simulations of eco-innovations in cities that build on an advanced representation of households. In order to ensure realistic projections these combine demographic and spatial simulations with agent-based modelling. This enables the model to answer specific questions with regard to household behaviours including short-term adoption of eco-innovations and medium- and long-term demand. The basic module can be specified for several energy-efficiency markets.
