Laser technology

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is an independent non-profit institute committed to research and development in photonics and laser technology. The LZH focuses on innovative research, development, expert training and consulting in the field of photonic technologies.
Since the foundation 1986 under the patronage of the German State Ministry of Economics, Labour and Transport in Lower Saxony interdisciplinary is strongly emphasized. The interdisciplinary cooperation between physicists, engineers, biologists, medical scientists and others is the basis for a number of innovations ­ from basic research to industrial applications.
Six R&D departments combine expertise in optical components and systems, optical production technologies and biomedical photonics. The innovations range from components and specific laser systems, for example for space applications, up to processes for different laser applications such as medial engineering or lightweight constructions for the automotive or aerospace sector.

What we offer

Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) of miniature components or challenging materials requires a lot of expertise. The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) develops laser-based processes for complex questions in the area of LAM. The LZH works on bioresorbable magnesium implants as well as functional microactors out of shape memory alloy or precision tools out of polymers.

What we offer

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) offers manufacturing services of 3D-microparts for medical and biomedical engineering, special machinery and micro packaging. With a resolution in the one-digit-area, microstereolithography can be used for manufacturing complex miniature parts from polymers. Applications range from parts for flow cytometry to training models for microsurgery.

LASER-BASED CLADDING

What we offer

A new surfacing process which innovatively combines the productivity of electrical arc welding processes with the precision of laser based processes is currently being developed at the LZH. The gas metal arc process is modified with a second torch which allows the arc to be ignited between the two consumable wire electrodes. The arc plasma is therefore not transferred to the workpiece, greatly reducing thermal stress. Also, the energy of the plasma is used very efficiently for the melting process, providing high deposition rates. The laser is deflected by a scanner mirror and focused on the workpiece. By melting the surface, the laser ensures a sound bond between the coating and the substrate. This way high deposition rate can be combined with low dilution.

HYBRIDWELDING OF THICK STEEL AND ALUMINUM PLATES

What we offer

Low costs and high degrees of efficiency make hybrid welding an attractive process for thick-walled applications and large welding lengths, e.g. for pipelines and shipbuilding. The combination of laser beam welding with the conventional gas metal arc welding (GMAW) steadies the light arc due to interactions and thus increases the depth of the welding seam significantly. The process allows the one-sided welding of steel plates with up to 23 mm thickness and aluminum plates up to 12 mm thickness.

LASER PROCESSING OF MIXED JOINTS

What we offer

The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) has developed and characterized a laser welding process for steel and aluminum sheets. This process allows for both increased joining widths and low welding depths. Multiple adjacent welding seams serve to increase the tensile strength of the joint. The joining of the two metals is especially useful for light weight construction in the automotive industry, plant- and apparatus engineering.
